The Belle of the Fur Ball

Billed as Baton Rouge’s premier pet-friendly gala, the Fur Ball benefits the Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge, a nonprofit that operates our local animal shelter and seeks to reduce animal euthanasia and find permanent homes for dogs and cats. How could we possibly have passed on such a great event for such a great cause?
The evening started with a walk down the red carpet. (I guess they didn’t dare opt for a green carpet; that might have confused some of the guests!) I’m quite accustomed to flashing cameras–it seems my mommy always has that crazy camera of hers in my face–so I struck a few of my best poses and really showed off my canine couture. Somewhere around 75 dogs attended the event, and we spent a little while meeting and greeting (as only dogs should) while our humans enjoyed cocktails and perused the silent auction items. For the pups, there were plenty of huge water bowls throughout the ballroom. I will admit that I drank . . . a lot. It seemed as if every time we passed one of those water bowls, I had to have a little sip . . . or a big gulp. When it was time for the human dinner, some dogs went to day care and others stayed with their humans. I stayed with my humans and enjoyed a very nice nap.
After dinner it was time for more mingling. I found myself quite smitten with a couple of handsome German Shepherds. This is Dutch and he is currently being fostered by Red Stick German Shepherds, an organization of volunteers dedicated to finding forever homes for this special breed. Dutch came to his foster home a little thin, but he has put on some weight and I must say that he is looking quite fabulous, and he is super sweet. I’m keeping my paws crossed that he finds a very special family that will love, love, love him forever. I know my wish will come true.
This is Casper, a very lucky German Shepherd rescue who has found a wonderful and loving forever home. Casper was wearing a little note politely asking partygoers not to touch him. Casper is blind and unexpected touches can startle him, but once he is comfortable and expecting to be touched he loves it just as much as I do. My mommy was so proud of me with Casper. I was super sweet, calm, and gentle. I really enjoyed getting to know Casper, and I am so happy that he has such a great home.
After visiting with Dutch and Casper, I hit the dance floor with my daddy. It was so much fun to see so many dogs and their humans cutting a rug–or more accurately slipping and sliding on a temporary parquet wood floor. My daddy and I had the very best time.
When we got home, mommy and daddy shared with me some of their impressions from the evening, and now I am sharing those impressions with you:
-
There were far more large dogs than my humans expected to see, and all the dogs were on their very best behavior.
- All of the humans were happy and generous with their silent- and live-auction bids. Perhaps all fundraising events should consider allowing people to bring their pets.
- All the humans were eager to talk to each other, but none of them wanted to talk about themselves. They wanted to talk about all of the dogs.
The Fur Ball was super fun and super exhausting. Not long after I had removed my pretty party collar, I stretched out on the floor, propped my head up on a bookshelf, closed my eyes, drifted off to la la land . . . and had sweet dreams of Dutch and Casper and all the homeless animals who will benefit from the fun we had.
OMD, what a pawesome event! That is so cool that folks got to bring their dogs, and that so many larger dogs were there! I love your pic at the step & repeat too!
It was a super fun pawty! I’m thinking of pitching a new reality show idea: Dancing with the Dogs. What do you think?
Awesome idea! We have America’s Top Dog in my house. Not only do I win every year, but I am also the main judge.
You made my mommy laugh. 🙂
Fur Ball — I love it! Very clever. I love the last photo, you look like a dreamy angel 🙂
I looked like that for most of Sunday and Monday, too!
You looked very stunning, HL. I think this Fur Ball is a wonderful idea. I’m happy that you were so well behaved, and we’re allowed to stay for dinner. Your friends also look very sweet. Thank you for sharing this lovely night.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
I wish you had been there, Cupcake. You would have had a marvelous time. 🙂
I MUST organise a Fur-Ball as a matter of urgency here in Australia! I can’t think of a more fabulous way to spend an evening. Harper Lee, you were definitely the belle of the ball!
Thank you so much! I will expect an invitation to your Australian Fur Ball!
Miss Harper Lee, you look stunning in your red carpet attire! If I ever have a gala to go to, will you be my puppy date? Wuvyooowooowoooo! Ku
Thank you, and I would be delighted to be your puppy date, Ku!
What fun! Everyone looks dressed to the 9’s. We should send their photos to Vanity Fair for the Best-Dressed list!
It was a great evening, and the humans looked pretty good, too. 😉
Looking all fancy for the event!
Thank you. I was feeling pretty fancy!
Wow you are quite the socialite! The Sundogs are barely allowed in the city.
The Fur Ball was great, but I cannot imagine how much fun it would be to join the Sundogs in Tahoe for a fun swim and running on the pier! I’m ready to pack my bags and head west. 🙂
Wow Harper Lee! You look beautiful! That sounds like so much fun!
Thank you so much. It was tons of fun. Tucker would have been the perfect date. 😉
You look so very gorgeous! What a great event. It looks like so much fun!

Thank you very much. The Fur Ball was a super fun event. Thank goodness I have a year to recover before next year’s ball!
Pawesome, you looked lovely!!!!
Thank you. Trev would have loved it!
Oh Miss Harper Lee you do the most fun things. The Fur Ball – wow sounds like the most fun!!
It was the very most fun . . . but it may take me a little time to recover. 😉
What alovely ball……
It really was lovely, and a great way to support our local shelter and its rescue efforts!
You all look so beautiful! The last picture is hilarious! Teehee She might have used that ruffle around her neck, but Kirby would be able to literally use it as a tutu lol
My mommy actually got the idea for making the collar from seeing little girl’s tutus! Kirby is welcome to borrow my special collar and wear it as a tutu anytime!
Well that doesn’t look too comfortable a place to sleep – but then who am I to talk – I like to sleep with my head lolling over the side of chairs etc., and the blood rushing to my brain!
My humans always laugh at me when I sleep this way. I love to have my head propped up against or on something when I sleep . . . except when I am on my dog bed, and then I like for my head to hang off the edge. I’m a little quirky. 😉
What a GREAT event and it looks like you were top dog at the party with your great boa. The Shepherds were handsome, I can see why you were smitten with them. Have a great Wednesday.
The Fur Ball was such a great event, and I cannot wait for next year!
You looked stunning MHL and my Momz is jealous cause there’s nothing like that Ball around here…what fun fur efurryone to dress up in pawty clothes fura big night out…Dinner & dancing and all those new furriends…thanks fur sharing such a great night
The Fur Ball was tons of fun! We’ll send you an invitation for next year. By then, I should be fully recovered. 🙂
That’s a nice benefit. I wonder why there are so many larger dogs available? Do you think it has something to do with the perception a larger dog is a larger expense?
The large dogs were actually already in loving homes and accompanying their humans to the Fur Ball. Very lucky dogs indeed, although I am sure that many large dogs in shelters can have a more difficult time finding loving homes for many reasons . . . sadly. 😦
What a great event and you looked very pretty. We’re so glad there were so many nice dogs enjoying the event and being very good.
It was a great event, and it will help so many animals who just need a helping hand . . . or paw. 🙂
Miss Lee – I am so glad you had a grand time at the ball and I’m sure your humans looked ever so lovely as you!!
It was really, really fun . . . and I must say my humans were looking pretty spiffy. They were the perfect accessory for this Golden girl. 😉
