The Country Girl: Part 2

I joined my humans on the porch of Chase’s Cottage while they enjoyed their coffee and breakfast and we all eased into another relaxing day.
We enjoyed a beautiful walk in front of the plantation house. As I’ve said before, this was my third stay at Butler Greenwood, but this was the first time my humans trusted me off-leash in front of the house. This was a very big deal.
Our fabulous picnic lunch was the highlight of the weekend for my mommy. My mommy loves a picnic, and this one was super special. We spread our picnic blanket (which is more of a tablecloth, but it’s what Mommy likes to use for picnics) in the shade of some beautiful trees outside of our cottage. My humans enjoyed chicken salad wraps (prepared by my mommy), grapes, and, of course, a little wine. I enjoyed exploring my surroundings.
After our picnic lunch, we all enjoyed relaxing on a beautiful early summer afternoon. My daddy found just the right spot to scratch me. Even my mommy relaxed, and that doesn’t happen very often.
The afternoon just flew by, and suddenly it was time for our dinner. I had my usual dog food, but my humans treated themselves to a little wine and cheese. That’s when my mommy glanced out the window and saw Humphrey the peacock visiting our end of the pond.
Naturally my mommy heard the call of the wild and dashed out the door to become a wildlife photographer. My daddy and I chose to stay inside. Daddy wanted to remain close to the wine and cheese, and I was simply too exhausted from my day to get up off of the nice cool floor.
Sunday morning arrived much too soon. My humans explained to me that our wonderful weekend had come to an end. I was super, super sad at first. My weekend had been beyond magical. I saw ducks, peacocks, all sorts of bids, chipmunks, and even fireflies. (Who knew a Golden Retriever could actually see a firefly? Trust me, I did; and to prove it my mommy has a nearly dislocated shoulder from the massive yank I gave to my leash.) I heard frogs, and frogs, and more frogs at the edge of the pond, and I smelled things that I can only imagine. As we packed up and headed home, my humans promised me that we will return to Butler Greenwood Plantation and Bed and Breakfast very soon. I plan to hold my humans to that promise.
I know that yanking sore all too well! What a beautiful place. I like your humans’ wine and cheese too – looks delicious. And that peacock is so beautiful!
My mommy’s friend (who is the proud mother of a Golden Retriever) actually had to do physical therapy for her “dog walker shoulder” condition. 🙂
Mom says she feels a little less stressed just from reading this post & looking at the lovely pictures.

I am so happy that I helped to de-stress your mom!
What a magical weekend for a sweet girl!
Maybe one day the three of you will join me at Butler Greenwood. We sure would have fun!
You lead a great life Harper Lee! Thanks for sharing your stories. Cheers from Tucker.
I’m a pretty lucky girl, and I’m very thankful for all of my opportunities. Cheers to you and Tucker. Have a great weekend!
WOW – that is absolutely beautiful. It *almost* makes me want to overcome my fear of nature. I’m working on it. If it’s that gorgeous on the outside, it’ll happen soon. Thank you so much for sharing those pictures. I loved them! …. and so did mom. She’s off making a picnic for her and dad now for later. 🙂 XOXO – Bacon
The only thing missing from my weekend was a cute little pig like you! I hope your humans enjoy their picnic, and that they share a little with you. 🙂
aaww thanks my friend. they are going in just a few minutes. they just got done fixing my lunch – mmm it was good. piggy chow and fresh fruit. have a fantastic weekend!! XOXO – Bacon
What a good girl you were. And boy your humans sure know how to have a good time. By the looks of that wine and cheese I might have thought you were in California near me. You must have been sad to see the weekend end.
It was very sad to leave, but I know we’ll get to go back . . . and who knows what my next adventure will be. 🙂
How awesome, that looks like a great place for people and dogs.
It really is, and isn’t it nice when people can enjoy great places with their dogs? My humans and I love that!
What a wonderful place! And all those other animals and smells to explore! I hope you get to go back soon Miss Harper Lee! Wooooowooooooooo! Ku
Miss Harper Lee you look stunning as always. We LOVE seeing your photos. How lucky you are to have a weekend away with your Mommy and Daddy! Our Mom thinks the bottle of red and the platter of cheese looks VERY enticing too.
My humans seemed pretty excited about that wine and cheese too. 🙂
What a fun weekend. I feel relaxed and mellow just from reading this, Miss, HL. Thanks!
Love and licks and a yawn and a cuddle,
Cupcake
Relaxed and mellow . . . that’s just perfection! Have a great weekend.
Oh Miss Harper Lee, you had the most wonderful weekend! So kind of you to let the humans have those chicken wraps while you were eating dog food…beauty and a kind heart. 🙂
Maybe not so much a kind heart as a fear of having my nose slapped off. That’s what Mommy says to me . . . “Miss Harper Lee, if you touch that I’ll slap your nose right off of your face!” I’m pretty sure she’s serious.
Your mommy sounds a lot like Miss Eudora Welty’s character Mama in How I Came to Live at the P.O. which is the old woman Slow’s favorite short story of all time.
My mommy will have to read that short story. My mommy absolutely adores Eudora Welty. When Mommy was a student at LSU, she saw Eudora Welty and Walker Percy at a reading. Heaven! In fact, she has mentioned the name Eudora for a future pup. My daddy’s not so sure about that.
Oh just wonderful! Can we join you next time?… Wait. That picnic would never have survived with our boys around it!
The more the merrier. We’ll bring extra dog treats to distract the boys. 😉
That sounds like a lovely getaway!
It was very lovely. I cannot wait to go back. (Hope my humans read this comment and get the hint!)
What a lovely place to visit. And that last photo of you is beautiful. I think that peacock might have frightened me, it looks taller than I am!
That peacock was a little intimidating, so sometimes I just pretended I didn’t see him!
I have to say that this B&B looks like heaven to me too Miss HL … And they let have the run of the place to sniff and explore…amazing Hope you get to go back soon
It truly is pup paradise. I’m working on my humans to get a return visit in fall or winter. Winter trips are great fun because after exploring I get to lounge in front of a fireplace. 🙂
Miss Harper Lee, we’re so jealous! We wish mommy could take us on a country escapade too. More importantly, how DID you manage to have the discipline not to jump on those cheese and crackers???!! You are such a good pooch Harper Lee, we really look up to you! Love, Charlie and Hannah.
Trust me, I was so tired after a full day of exploring and enjoying nature that I simply didn’t have the energy left to go after the human food!
Off leash, Miss Harper Lee, that IS a big deal! You handled it so well, and I applaud your restraint around the food on the picnic mat. Good girl!
You pictures are lovely.
Off leash really is a very big deal. I don’t get to do it often, but when I do I try to be very good!
What a wonderful place to vacation, and so great that they welcome dogs there too! We humans love it when we can bring our dogs on vacation with us! Picnics are one of my favorite things too. I am so glad you and your Mom and Dad had such a nice time, Miss Harper Lee. I thoroughly enjoyed the photos, and the thought of all that lovely relaxation!
I am so happy that you enjoyed your virtual visit to Butler Greenwood. It is very, very nice that dogs are welcome there. In fact, while I was there I met another guest dog, Gator, who was celebrating his dad’s college graduation. It’s so nice that he could join his humans!
Sounds like you had such a great time…good for you! I personally love the menu choices…chicken salad, cheese and crackers, and wine sound wonderful. Hope you get to return soon.
It was a very fun weekend, and my humans seemed super excited about all of their food choices. 🙂
Looks like a slice of heaven – complete with a wind guarding pooch.
I meant WINE Guarding – BOL
I know that it is very, very important to my humans to guard their wine!
Such a lovely place!
It is a really lovely place, and great for relaxing. I hope I get to go back soon. Hint, hint to my humans. 😉
That sure looks like a beautiful place.
It’s a great place, and it’s super nice that humans are allowed to bring their canine family members to enjoy it!
Ooh! I saw peacocks too this weekend! I’ll have to post them 🙂
I love the gazebo in the first photo!
Isn’t the gazebo wonderful? It’s tucked away on the side of the house. Looks like a fun place for lunch. Cannot wait to see your peacock photos!
and the resident old grey tabby cat at Butler Greenwood is named Eudora Rose!
Come back soon. Check out our website at http://www.butlergreenwood.com and Facebook Butler Greenwood Plantation B&B. We love well-behaved pets.
Butler Greenwood Plantation
Just think, Eudora Rose and Miss Harper Lee on the grounds of Butler Greenwood Plantation. How very literary!
Looks like such a great time, love the peacock photo.
I learned that weekend that peacocks are very, very loud!
