Hitting the Bottle

From time to time, I like to hit the bottle. Oh goodness, I don’t think that came out right. What I meant to say is that I like to play with empty water bottle toys. Although Hedgehog and Cow and a few of my other stuffed squeaky toys do occasionally have to be admitted to Squeaky Toy Hospital, I am generally pretty kind to stuffed toys. Empty water bottle toys are another story entirely. I just cannot get enough of that crunching plastic sound. I will chew and chew and chew and then–sometimes in a matter of minutes–that cute little outside covering is in tatters. Yes, I have ripped the tails from empty water bottle squirrels and removed the cute little noses from empty water bottle puppies. I just cannot help myself. My mommy decided that buying those cute little covers was a complete waste of money, but she didn’t want to deny me the tremendous joy that is the empty water bottle crunch.

So my mommy hit upon this brilliant idea: Why not take those empty water bottles, shove them into a couple of tube socks, tie some knots on the ends, and let me have my fun?

The tube socks and the poor empty water bottles inside of them don’t last any longer than those cute little covers she used to buy at the store . . .

. . . but Mommy sure feels a whole lot better about watching me destroy this far less expensive homemade version . . . and I get to hit the bottle a whole lot more often. Now everyone’s happy!

  1. For dogs that love the crinkly bottles like you do, that is a FANTASTIC idea! Dakota doesn’t care for the water bottle toys that they make, but who knows? Maybe he would like this? Genius!

    • My mommy agrees with Dakota that the crinkly water bottle sound is a bit obnoxious. Thank goodness she indulges me. She has found that if she puts several socks around the bottle, the sound is not quite as irritating .. . of course, I don’t like it as much that way. 🙂

  2. Reblogged this on Snoopy's Collars and commented:
    Great Idea!!!!

Oh yeah, we like to hit the bottle too. In one of our Barboxes, we got this rubber slip that fits over a small water bottle and it has held up pretty well since then (maybe 6/7 months?). I like the sock idea too. We have an overabundance of those in the house!

  4. Misaki says:

That is such a great idea. I love plastic bottles and had one of those teddy shaped covers, but he didn’t last long. Will definitely be giving this a go!

    • Thank you! I hope it works for you, because there are few tings quite a wonderful as the crunch a plastic bottle makes as dog jaws repeatedly crunch down on it! Just FYI–my mommy has found that if she doubles of even triples the socks, the length of my fun with the bottle is greatly increased!

  5. A bottle in a sock is the funnest toy ever! Your mom is a genius! What a brilliant idea!

    Love and licks,

Miss Lee, your Mom is SO creative! I’m thinking we could also use Dad’s old socks that maybe just have some little holes in them. Sheba has not had water bottle toys, but I think we will give this a try with her! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Oh Miss Harper Lee, your Mommy is as brilliant as you are cute!! What a dangerous combo you two are!! 🙂

  8. Marcie says:

  16. Nice!!! Good thinkin’ MOms! Ma usually doesn’t give me those cause my ‘mighty Airedale jaws’ are just too much for most of those toys. Butts this is a good idea!

What a clever idea – you have a clever mom. I might pass on the tip to The Help and suggest she do that for the big guy.

    • This could be the perfect toy for the big guy, and it would protect your precious toys, Princess Zena. 🙂 My mommy has found that doubling or even tripling the socks makes that poor little bottle last even longer. 🙂

  18. Tucker likes to “hit the bottle” too. Here’s to cheap thrills!!!

Thanks for the how-to-post, Miss Harper Lee. The boys have never been that fond of hitting the bottle, so to speak, but we have cut bottles and added catnip to make smelly, noisy batting toys for the cat and she loves them!

  23. At least you are not devouring tin cans like the Sundogs sometimes do. Your mommy is so good to you. Boy….. the attention you must get being a only child

  24. Oh dear, Miss Harper Lee, we were very concerned about you on reading the title. But when we found out you were talking about bottle TOYS, we were so excited! You see, playing with empty bottles is like our favorite thing, EVER. But now , you’ve inspired our mom with some great ideas, so we’ll get to play with bottles even more. Thanks! Love, Hannah and Charlie

  26. Jessica says:

What a great idea! Your mommy saves the planet AND her wallet at the same time! 😉 What is your mommy’s favorite place to get those white socks…my first thought is Target (AKA: “The happiest place on Earth”)! 😉
