Obedience Boot Camp

I don’t know about you (well, I do have a pretty good idea), but I kind of let myself go during the long Independence Day weekend. I probably ate a few too many treats (admit it, you ate some things you shouldn’t have eaten, too) and I allowed my schedule to fly out the window (I’ll bet you slept a little late and snuck in a nap or two). That might explain why, on my first post-holiday walk Monday morning, my mommy reached this conclusion: I lacked discipline and focus, and it was time for a little obedience boot camp. Uh oh.

Boot camp started the minute we returned from our walk. I normally eat my breakfast just as soon as I wake up (after I come back inside from my first morning patrol of the backyard perimeter). During the long weekend, however, I decided that I far preferred brunch to breakfast. Well, when Mommy and I returned from my Monday morning walk, she gently guided me to my breakfast, kissed my head, and whispered these sweet words to me: “If you don’t eat your breakfast right now, Miss Harper Lee, I’m going to pick this bowl up and you won’t have anything to eat until dinner.” That’s when it was very clear to me that the drill sergeant had invaded my mommy’s body and we were in full boot camp mode.

I ate all of my breakfast immediately . . . every last drop . . . see?

Fortunately for me, my mommy had a few things to do during the day, so I managed to work in some nap time. It’s a good thing I did, because the drill sergeant my mommy had plans for my afternoon.

We went outside and did Sit Stay with Distance, Distractions, and Duration. My mommy tried her very, very best to get me on this one, but somehow I managed to resist Pink Pig, Frisbee, Gator, Hedgehog, and a Boudreaux’s Bonz Chicken Gumbo treat . . . not to mention all of the interesting things that were happening in and around my yard.

Next we did Down Stay with Distance, Distractions, and Duration. Did you notice that my mommy somehow snuck in a little banana-flavored treat? Banana is one of my favorite things. My mommy is tricky, but I did it.

Then it was time for the big test: Come. Not just any Come, but Come Right to Me Right Now without Stopping to Look at or Pick Up Pink Pig, Frisbee, Gator, Hedgehog, the Chicken Gumbo treat, or the banana-flavored treat. Well, obviously I struggled a bit with this one . . .

. . . but I did it. Do you see that? It’s all still back there. As you might be able to tell from my tongue, it was very hot and very humid outside, and then it started to sprinkle just a bit, and that’s when my mommy stopped being a drill sergeant and said to me, “Miss Lee, it’s really miserable out here, and you’ve done very well. Let’s go inside where it’s cool and get some rest.” I cannot begin to tell you the relief I felt when I realized the drill sergeant was gone and Mommy was back . . . but I have a feeling that obedience boot camp will continue through this week.

  1. Well done! Way to go! We train our 2 as well, most days when we play on the field.

    • Daily training is very good. If my humans were completely honest with you, they would admit that they have become a bit lax in my training, so naturally I have been getting away with pretending that I have forgotten a lot of things. 😉 My humans and I all need to get back into a training routine.

  2. You did a great job at boot camp. I agree we all need more naps, get them in when you can!

  3. 2browndawgs says:

Excellent job! Glad you survived boot camp!

  4. Peppino says:

I sure hope the drill sergeant has left and your mom has returned!

  5. Well done to you. Sounds like you dealt with boot camp unbelievably well. Good luck with the rest of them

    • The early results from yesterday’s session were evident on my morning walk today, and I received lots and lots of praise and love from my mommy. This boot camp thing does have some benefits. 😉

It’s easy to get distracted by a long weekend or other things in life, and get out of our routines and disciplines. It seems like you remembered all you had learned very well though, Miss Lee! By the end of the week, you should be in good shape, and will probably ace your class.

    • Sometimes my humans forget that training is an everyday thing . . . so I pretend that I forget, too. 😉 But then we get back into our routine and we remember how much we enjoy it . . . and how competitive we are when it comes to our obedience class!. Look out, pups!

  7. Wow…boot camp. Bummer. But you did awesome!

  8. finnhoward says:

Oh my goodness, look at all those distractions!! Looks like you did an excellent job with boot camp. Maybe the drill sargent will let you off the hook since you did so well right away!

  9. Miss Lee you have such self control! I’m glad drill sergeant mommy is gone too! Sometimes my Mama turns into As Simba called her: MummySlaveDriver!

  10. What a good girl, Miss HL. I am pretty sure it was tough to resist the toys, but the treats, too! It’s just too much for one dog to take!! I am so proud, and so hoping the drill seargent doesn’t visit here…..

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    • Well, now I’m going to have to admit that I did swipe a couple of treats during our boot camp session. But they were the really, really good Chicken Gumbo ones. Can you blame me?

  11. Oh you poor thing Miss HL!! We got a cold shiver down our spine when we read your drill sgt…sorry, mommy’s words at breakfast time! Be strong xxx

  12. Gizmo says:

Uh oh Miss HL I better hide this from Momz…she can be a pretty strict drill sergent too…But you did really well & I hope you got those treats for all your hard work

  13. Miss Harper Lee, The Red Man has no idea what you’re talking about with all those COMMANDS.. Shit house mouse. I tell you what – you make our Pack look pretty Pathetic. 🙂

Sometimes brunch is even better than breakfast.

I think I should drop my boys off sometime when you’re doing your drills. Maybe they’d learn something! It looks like you did a great job and passed all of your Mama’s tests. You should be very proud of yourself!

Thank you for participating in Christmas in July! I love getting new entrants each year, and discovering new blogs such as yours.

    • I would love it if your boys dropped by for my obedience boot camp–less attention and pressure on me! I’m very excited about Christmas in July, and I really, really hope that I get to help my mommy with the shopping. 🙂

  18. wow, the drill seargent meant business didn’t she?? Thank goodness you got your mommy back! Although now our mommy’s got this idea in her head that she should do the same for us ! She’s saying “See? you could learn a think or two from Miss Lee! Look how disciplined she is!”..uh oh, we smell trouble ahead!! Woofs, Charlie and Hannah

  19. I told Mommy she was going to start something horrible for all of the other blog dogs. 😉 Sorry Charlie and Hannah. 😦

  20. Sam says:

We all need a touch up here or there… Hopefully, it won’t spread…

    Sam

    • I am very pleased to report that my little obedience refresher is going very well, and I sincerely hope that my mommy’s dreadful boot camp idea does not spread . . . at least not to your house!

  21. Jessica says:

Wow…Mommy means business! Well, your “fun” experience created a wonderful post with awesome training activities that I am eager to try with Taylor! 🙂

  22. Check out my blog today you Miss Harper Lee have SEVEN awards awaiting you! http://sandspringchesapeakes.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/this-n-that-thursday-18/

  23. cramercare says:

Miss Harper Lee—you must find a way to reverse this training thing. YOU need to be training your mommy. You should be training her to retrieve treats for you, and run as fast as she can to pet you, whenever you make a little squeak!!!
