Play Ball!

Last Thursday, my little sister and I joined our humans at the Shrine on Airline to watch the New Orleans Baby Cakes minor-league baseball team take on the Iowa Cubs, an affiliate of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs. The Baby Cakes host Dog Day at each of their Thursday-evening games. Every Thursday also happens to be Thirsty Thursday with $2 12-ounce domestic drafts, which comes in very handy for all the humans who are stressed about ensuring that their four-legged family members behave themselves for nine innings.

Technically, this wasn’t my first time at the ballpark. I concluded last year’s A to Z Challenge with a trip to Zephyr Field, as it was known them, but I only got to see the outside that day. (You can click here to read that post.) And back then, our Triple A Miami Marlins affiliate team was called the Zephyrs. Then they had a big contest to change the name and, in a bit of a controversial move, they became the Baby Cakes. It’s a play on our Mardi Gras tradition of placing a little plastic baby in our king cakes, but it’s a little odd because no one ever says “baby cakes” around here. Nevertheless, the new name has grown on us and the logo is pretty fabulous, so we’ll give our hometown team a pass. But I digress. Back to the game.

Humans and their canines have the option of enjoying the game from two different locations. Most of us sat beyond the outfield in an area of the ballpark called the levee. The nice people with the Baby Cakes set up water bowls and kiddy pools for the pups to enjoy, and there’s plenty of room to stretch your legs . . . all four of them.

Dogs are also invited to join their humans in certain sections of the stands along the first base side of the ballpark. We decided that Tallulah probably wasn’t quite ready for that level of sophistication, but we did stop by to enjoy the view.

And speaking of Tallulah, her mind tended to wander during the game. She was far more interested in the dogs around us and the hotdogs and Cracker Jacks their humans were enjoying than she was in the action on the diamond.

My big round eyes, on the other hand, were glued to the game . . .

. . . except for when I dosed off briefly. Turns out baseball is pretty conducive to napping.

My humans, Tallulah, and I say cheers to the Baby Cakes. We had a fantastic time and our hometown team won the evening we were there. We definitely plan on attending another Thursday evening Dog Day game this season. Here’s hoping we catch a homerun ball or at least have a little taste of a hot dog on our next visit.

Have you ever gotten to join your humans at a sporting event in your hometown?

Looks like a real fun time!

    • It was super fun. They also have one special Bark in the Park night with special giveaways for dogs. This season’s Bark in the Park was Saturday, but my humans had some human thing they had to do that night. I need to have a serious talk with those humans about their priorities. 😉

Squeals with piggy excitement. Pick me – Pick me. I would love to go with your humans too beautifuls. I’ve been thinking about ya’ll often lately wondering about you. Much love to all. XOXO – Bacon

    • Oh Bacon, if you lived here we would definitively go to the ballpark together. Can you imagine the looks we’d get sitting out there on the levee? The players would be so distracted they’d drop every ball hit their way!

      • Piglove says:

Snorts and oinks. It would be a snort of a great time beautiful! If I’m in the area, I will definitely call you! XOXO – Bacon

  3. I love the name and the logo is such fun! Our city built a fabulous baseball park but our team left and it has sadly gone downhill very quickly.

    • I’m so sorry about your team leaving, but that sounds like a perfect opportunity for a dog park to me. Let’s put Bentley and Pierre in charge of the campaign to get that going. 🙂

So much fun!! As a matter of fact MLB has “Bark in the Park,” I have gone the last 2 years and will get to go again this year. Your humans should road trip it to Big D and we could go together. All my Instagram friends are coming this year, should be a great night. Let’s hope the Rangers win!!

  5. you are sooo lucky that you get to go to the ballpark! Look at how well-behaved you are too! Dakota has never been to the ballpark here, I am afraid he wouldn’t do as well 🙂

    • Haha! I was the perfect angel (as usual) but Mommy kept what she calls “the death grip” on Tallulah for much of the evening. Tallulah still managed to nearly topple the nice usher man (who, by the way, deserves a photo credit for that third picture). Alas, my little sister has a tendency to love just a bit too much.

  6. How happy was I to see that Tallulah had been promoted to a baseball adventure with the Baby Cakes! Miss Harper Lee sets such a fabulous example for her if she will only follow suit!
The whole family looks fantastic, but I have to say Miss Harper Lee steals the show – as always!!

    • Moment of truth, Miss Sheila: We left during the fourth inning. We’d managed to avoid any major incidents and wisely decided not to push our luck. Baby steps with the Baby Cakes for my baby sister. 🙂

  7. $2 domestic drafts???? Whoa, that’s not any baseball park I’m familiar with!! My sister’s BIL has been affiliated with the Iowa Cubs broadcasting team forever. What a small world. 🙂 Here’s hoping you guys score big time on the hot dogs!

    • They also have mimosas for Sunday games. Mommy loves that! Cannot believe your sister’s brother-in-law is affiliated with the Iowa Cubs. It is indeed a very small world. She’ll have to ask him what the Cubs’ left fielder thought about the dogs just beyond the outfield. He kept looking back like he was trying to figure out what we were all doing back there. 😉

How fun! Though I’m not much of a baseball fan that grassy area sure looks like a fun place to run around. Much like Tallulah I think I would been trying to steal a bite of a yummy hot dog!

    • Haha! I think half the dogs there actually wanted to be running around on the field itself. Just imagine digging some really deep holes in that beautifully manicured grass. That would get the humans excited. 😉

      • pibblelife says:

The best is when you make them look like crazy silly people in public as they come running towards you yelling and flailing their arms about! haha

  9. KDKH says:

Don’t worry, Ms. Harper Lee, baseball puts me to sleep, too. It just goes on forever. Glad you all had fun!

  10. We’re big baseball fans here at the Golden K and follow the SF Giants religiously. Our girls have no choice but to watch on tv although they too seem prone to a 6 or 7 inning nap starting around inning two. Minor league games are a lot of fun and as you’ve pointed out a good value- who could pass on a $2 beer or two? Cheers! 🍻

    • I think your girls are pretty lucky that they get to “watch” (aka sleep through) baseball on television from the comforts of home–air conditioning, soft beds, access to dog treats. And just think: your beers are “free.” Cheers to you!

  11. Marty the Manx says:

Looks like a wonderful time Miss Harper Lee. You are all looking quite happy and healthy 🙂

  12. Jan K says:

We’ve never done anything like that before, but it sure looks like fun!
