Harper Lee from A to Z: P is for PURPLE

P1 thek9harperlee

Well, once again my blogging assistant/human mommy was stumped when we got to the letter P. Paw? No, too obvious, and you already saw my fuzzy feet when we did the letter F. Pet friendly? No, my entire world is pet friendly, so that post would have gone on and on and on and . . . . So we turned to our Instagram friend @johnanng of 3 Crazy Retrievers fame for suggestions. She thought of inches for our I post, so she had to have something for P, right? And she did: P is for purple. Brilliant!

I really ought to fire my mommy for not thinking of this one on her own . . . but she works for free and feeds me, so I guess I’ll let her slide just this one time. Purple has been my color since I was just a tiny puppy. I have always had a purple collar. Now I have three: my purple and gold fleur-de-lis collar that my humans bought for me in the New Orleans French Quarter, my purple leather collar with metal LSU studs that I have had since my second birthday (when my humans decided that my neck had grown as much as it ever would), and my specially monogrammed purple and gold collar that my 3 Crazy Retriever friends sent to me for my fifth birthday last month. Are you seeing a theme here? Not yet, well . . .

. . . I also have quite a collection of purple toys. There’s Long Dog, LSU Football, and Other LSU Football, which is a little deflated now but nevertheless a very special purple toy. Do you see the theme now? If you’re thinking that I love purple because I also love the LSU Tigers, you’re right! I will always love my Tigers and I will always love purple, because purple is my color. Now if only I could convince my humans to give me a big purple bed . . . .

Harper Lee from A to Z: B is for BLING

B1 thek9harperlee

Today as we journey through the alphabet, I give you bling on a blue bench. Miss Marilyn Monroe was right: Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend. But why should the joy of bling be reserved for the human ladies? Sometimes a canine girl wants to wear a little something special too.

And I ask you, really, is there anything more fabulous than bling that celebrates my LSU Tigers? Especially when it’s on a blonde. (Did you catch that? I threw in another word that starts with B.) This beautiful (I did it again) bling was a gift from my Aunt Meredith, and I absolutely love wearing it. I lost it once when I was acting like a dog (oh the horror) in our back yard. Then, months and months later, my neighbor’s eye caught a sparkle from the “diamonds.” There’s nothing happier than a girl who has been reunited with her bling.

Callin’ Baton Rouge*

Red Stick thek9harperlee

Quite a while ago, I was asked by Shaye at Simply Shaye: Living Life One Day at a Time to write a post for DogVacay that shows how I represent my hometown in a fun and quirky way. My hometown is Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Baton Rouge is French for Red Stick, so obviously as a dog I just love a city with stick as part of its name. Baton Rouge is a great little city for dogs. We have lots and lots of public parks for walks and fun; and when we get tired of walks in the parks, there’s always the Mississippi River levee. We’re welcoming a growing number of dog-friendly restaurants, and autumn is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor dining in the Red Stick. Baton Rouge is home to the Port of Baton Rouge on the Mighty Mississippi River, and we’re the state capitol of Louisiana.

But  more than anything, Baton Rouge is a college football kind of town. We are home to Louisiana State University and Southern University. A couple of weeks ago, both schools celebrated homecoming, which made me start thinking about how much I would love to be LSU’s homecoming queen. I looked into it, and apparently I don’t qualify. Something about having to be a full-time student. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that I have four legs, floppy ears, and a tail that wags.

So I decided that I’ll stick to being a super fan. Honestly, I think it just might be a whole lot more fun than being a homecoming queen.

This is a big week for LSU football fans in Baton Rouge. We call it Bama Week–the week that our Fighting Tigers take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Frankly, sports fans, we face a bit of an uphill battle. We’re in a rebuilding year (that’s what they all say, right?), and our Number Thirteen-ranked Tigers have to travel to Tuscaloosa to face the Number One-ranked Tide. Most of the sports pundits have jumped to January and already have Alabama playing in (if not winning) the final BCS championship game. But here in Baton Rouge, hope springs eternal. After all, Baton Rouge is a college football kind of town, so in the middle of the week hope always springs eternal that our LSU Tigers can roll the Tide when Saturday night comes around. Wish us luck!

*The title of this post comes from a Garth Brooks song that’s played in Tiger Stadium before the start of every LSU football game. I hope you’ll click here to listen to the song and see a great video of some beautiful scenes from South Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University, and Tiger Stadium. Enjoy, and Geaux Tigers!
