52 Snapshots of Life: Week 10–Mischief

Remember how excited my human mommy was when she read that the theme for last week’s 52 Snapshots of Life would be purple? Well, multiply that by approximately 100 and you’ll have some slight inkling of the dread she felt when she saw this week’s theme: mischief.
I am not a mischievous girl. I have been a well-behaved dog since Day 1. (Yes, Mommy is fully aware of just how lucky she is. And yes, she also realizes that because she has been so lucky with me, her next dog will probably be a total wild child.) In my almost six years on this Earth, I have only had one moment of true mischief. I was just a few months old and I was “assisting” Mommy while she planted some pretty new rose bushes in the garden. Mommy glanced up and saw me running around the yard like a crazy girl with something in my mouth. At first she thought I had picked up a branch that had fallen from a tree. But then she couldn’t figure out why that branch had such beautiful red leaves in spring. And then she realized that I had grabbed one of the newly planted rose bushes and created my very own Rose Bowl Parade . . . crazy puppy style. I don’t recall exactly what Mommy said to me when she finally caught me, but it certainly convinced me that mischief would not be tolerated.
Which brings us to this week’s challenge. Yesterday I received a package from my Florida friends Sully, Murphy Brown, and Carter. (They are @rowdyretrievers on Instagram.) It was filled with fabulous surprises, including this bone-shaped mold. I gave Mommy a look that clearly said, “We need to use that thing now,” so she combined a little fat-free plain yogurt and some peanut butter and started spooning the mixture into the mold. Before putting the mold into the freezer, she let me have a little peek. I couldn’t help it, friends. Yogurt and peanut butter are two of my all-time favorite treats. And yogurt combined with peanut butter? Well, I just couldn’t control myself. I had to take a little lick.
And do you know what? Mommy let me keep licking, and licking, and licking. It might not seem like much to you, but to me it was a moment of mischief . . . and Mommy and I both loved it. Oh, don’t worry. We refilled the empty mold and popped it into the freezer, so I’ll have lots of bone-shaped frozen yogurt-peanut butter treats to enjoy. Who knows? Maybe I’ll bury some of those frozen bones around the house . . . under a rug, beneath a sofa cushion. This mischief thing is pretty fun!

Purple is my color.
I have three collars. They’re all purple.
And I have two feather boas, one purple and the other purple with a touch of gold.
When I’m wearing my purple boas and my “diamond” tiara, I feel like a princess . . .
. . . the Princess of Purple.

52 Snapshots of Life: Week 8–Mirror

I’ve never been one of those dogs who is fascinated by his of her reflection in a mirror. We only have one mirror in our house that’s low enough for me to see myself. It’s in a room that I hardly ever enter, but even then I’m not terribly interested in looking at myself.
When I visit New Orleans with my humans, we often walk by the Louisiana Children’s Museum. There are a couple of those funhouse mirrors outside of the doors, and my human mommy is always trying to get me to look at myself. No luck . . . although Mommy is oddly excited about seeing her own distorted image.
So you can imagine how much Mommy was not looking forward to trying to capture a photo for this week’s #52snapshots challenge. She thought about going all artsy and trying to get a photo of my world reflected in my eyes, but a late-afternoon cloudy sky didn’t help matters. So she went inside and grabbed the only handheld mirror that we own and hoped for the best.
And that’s when I surprised her by showing at least a bit of interest in my reflection. I have to say I made my mommy very happy. Sometimes we dogs have to humor our humans.

A Note from Harper Lee’s Mommy
I was planning the perfect snapshot that would perfectly represent this week’s theme: love. Should I snap Harper Lee with a cherished toy? Or perhaps a favorite treat? Maybe I should get a photo of Miss Lee frolicking with one of her many canine loves? (Though not a floozy, little Miss Harper Lee does have lots and lots of boyfriends . . . in all sizes and ages.) I even thought about using an old image from an Instagram photo challenge more than a year ago–a black and white of Harper Lee’s paw in my hand taken to depict a similar theme: lots of love.
And then this happened. Harper Lee’s human daddy snapped a family selfie before the start of the Mystic Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras parade a couple of weekends ago. I looked at this photo–the three of us together and smiling–and thought, “That’s it. That’s love.”

52 Snapshots of Life: Week 6–Create

My human mommy and I like to create together. We’ve created a whole lot of dog treats, a few fancy collars, and even a canine candy striper outfit.
For this week’s photo challenge, we decided to create something new. Mommy turned to the Internet and searched “Dog Crafts.” There were lots of fun projects: toys made from sweaters, poo-poo bag pouches that attach to collars, collapsible bowls.
But we settled on creating dog tags using Shrinky Dinks, shrinkable plastic sheets that you run through the inkjet printer. A number of sites offered templates and directions, and the project was fairly simple . . . although we did have a few rejects.
Mommy says this tag is perfect for me. I have no idea what she means. We decided to create a few extras for my friends. Apparently I’m not the only spoiled pup around.

52 Snapshots of Life: Week 5–Winter

I live in South Louisiana. I haven’t seen snow since just before my first birthday. Not a single flake in the last five years. I look at pictures of all my doggy friends frolicking in huge drifts of puffy white snow, and all I can do is dream.
But that doesn’t mean that I don’t absolutely love winter. Mother Nature does her very best to make up for our hot, humid, miserable summer days during the winter months. She sends us crystal clear blue skies and cool crisp days . . . perfect for refreshing walks in our beautiful parks.
It may not look like your typical winter wonderland. But to me, winter days like this are simply wonderful.

I have more than enough treats and an overflowing toy basket.
But my dream come true would be a never-ending supply of sticks. On a pretty day, there’s nothing better than sitting in my back yard and gnawing on a good stick. I think sticks are . . . dreamy.

A Note from Harper Lee’s Mommy
Sometimes life’s little joyous moments surprise you. For this week’s challenge, I had planned to post a photo of Miss Harper Lee with that classic Golden Retriever smile. But then a funny thing happened.
Harper Lee was outside with her human daddy doing a little grilling. Harper Lee loves to grill with her daddy. They call it “grilling and chilling,” and it’s their special time. I was in the kitchen preparing the rest of our dinner. And that’s when I got a text and saw this photo: a selfie from my husband with his little girl. He captured such a special moment . . . a joyful moment . . . and my heart was full of joy.
This photo reminded me that the best pictures aren’t those with perfect composition, or perfect lighting, or perfect focus. The best photos are those that capture perfectly joyful moments shared by those you love.

52 Snapshots of Life: Week 2–Music

My hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is also home to swamp blues, a genre of music that gained popularity in the 1950s and inspired musicians like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton. This mural is just a few miles from my house. It was painted by local artist Charles Barbier and pays homage to a number of area blues musicians and blues venues.
My human mommy and I visited the mural on a cold and drizzly morning, which I suppose is entirely appropriate for the blues. The mural was made possible through a partnership with the Walls Project, Mid City Redevelopment Project, and Cash America Pawn, owners of the wall on which it’s painted. A mural celebrating blues music and musicians on the side of a pawn shop . . . I guess that seems entirely appropriate, too.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas: My New Raincoat and a New Challenge

And on the tenth day of Christmas . . . I took my new rainy-day style to the streets. You might recall that last week we had lots and lots and lots of rain and I had a little difficulty finding a raincoat to fit my extra-extra-long body. Well, friends, the soggy weather has returned, but fortunately my new raincoat arrived in the mail a few days ahead of the first raindrop. So just before dark, I slipped into my new dog boots, snapped up my new raincoat, and headed out for a brisk walk.
I absolutely adore my new raincoat. It’s lightweight and fits perfectly. Best of all, it looks nice with my new dog boots . . . which I am also starting to love. So bring on the rain, Mother Nature. I have what it takes to weather your storms.
