52 Snapshots of Life: Week 2–Music

52week2thek9harperlee

My hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is also home to swamp blues, a genre of music that gained popularity in the 1950s and inspired musicians like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton. This mural is just a few miles from my house. It was painted by local artist Charles Barbier and pays homage to a number of area blues musicians and blues venues.

My human mommy and I visited the mural on a cold and drizzly morning, which I suppose is entirely appropriate for the blues. The mural was made possible through a partnership with the Walls Project, Mid City Redevelopment Project, and Cash America Pawn, owners of the wall on which it’s painted. A mural celebrating blues music and musicians on the side of a pawn shop . . .  I guess that seems entirely appropriate, too.

We think your somber expression is perfect for the blues too, Miss Lee. Great photos and great idea!

  3. Emmadog says:

Cool idea for music! You look like you might have the blues too in those photos!

Whoa! New Orleans is a total music city with the Neville Bros and Dr. John and the Jazz & Heritage Festival!

    • My humans and I love going to New Orleans, which is super dog friendly. And my humans love going to Jazz Fest, which is not dog friendly so I’ve never gotten to join them. Oh well, the music on the streets is pretty good, too!

How fun! My husband really loves that music and I know quite a few of the names on the wall. It’s very pretty!

    • We drive by the mural several times a week. It’s on a corner, and the bright colors really stand out. Plus, it’s so nice that the painting honors so many local musicians and that it was done by a local artist. My mommy took some pictures that show more of the wall, which she will email to you. I think you and your husband will really enjoy seeing all the names. We’ll also send info to you about my little boots. Mommy saw in your comment on a previous post that you were thinking of getting some for Harlow. So sorry that we got a bit behind over the holidays and didn’t get back to you sooner on that.

  6. Beautiful mural, just love it and the pictures with you.

    • So happy that you like the mural. The colors are just amazing in person. They’re even better on a sunny day, but naturally the only day we could get there the sky was dull and gray. Kind of made us blue. 😉 😉

  10. Well it looks great and it’s a perfect photo for this week! You know, those pawn shops always have lots of musical instruments in them. Maybe they wanted more advertising to the musicians?

    • You have a point, and this mural would be the perfect ad! P.S. We had to go really early to get our photos before cars parked in front of the mural, so Mommy was forced to resist the temptation to take a look inside to see what’s available. 😉

  11. I just love this picture! The mural is amazing.

I’m not sure I have ever seen you have such blue’s Miss Harper Lee. I just knew that you music themed photo would be wonderful when you are from such a musically rich area but this mural is better than I expected. Wonderful!

    • I am so happy that we exceeded your expectations. 😉 We are so fortunate to be surrounded by such fabulously talented musicians and such wonderful music. And about my blue face . . . it might have had something to do with the fact that Mommy dragged me out of bed waaaaay too early. I am not a morning girl. 😉

Pretty darn cool! *wags* – Gilligan

  15. Love the pictures and all of the colors and of course you!

    • Thank you! The colors are so great in person . . . and on a sunny day, which we haven’t had in a while. Oh well, this mural helps to brighten the neighborhood even when the sun is hiding!
