Rerun: Sensory Overload
Posted: June 22, 2014 Filed under: Things I Like | Tags: Dogs, Golden Retriever, Harper Lee, Pets, Photography, Thek9harperlee 47 CommentsMy human mommy/blogging assistant asked for a vacation. All right, she literally begged . . . and I’m a dog so I know begging when I see it. What could I do? She just looked so pitiful. So I said yes, and off she went to who knows where for who knows how long. While she’s away, I’m going to rerun some of my favorite blogs from the past. If the television networks can do it, so can I. Right? Oh, don’t worry about me. I can assure you that I am having an absolutely fabulous time while Mommy’s away. As they say, while the cat’s away . . .
By now you know that I have a certain sixth sense, but I’d like to take a moment to tell you about my other five senses.
Let’s start with my sense of sight. Except for when I’m napping, I see everything. Here are just a few of the things that I like to see:
-
Squirrels frolicking in my back yard
- Kitty cats gazing at me from a safe distance
- Bees buzzing around my head
- Airplanes soaring through the air
- Dog food dropping into my dinner bowl
Next we’ll consider my sense of hearing. I have very sensitive ears. Here are a few things I like to hear:
-
Ice cubes dropping from the dispenser
- Keys turning in the door lock
- Sunday morning jazz drifting through my house
- Envelopes dropping through the mail slot
- Peanut butter jar tops spinning open
Now for touch. To be honest with you, I would rather be touched than touch. So let’s talk about where I like to be touched:
-
Behind my ears
- Under my chin
- On my belly
- Between my toes
- OK, let me just go ahead and say it: I like to be touched everywhere!
Taste. Where do I begin? It might be easier to list the one or two things that I do not like, but here are a few of my favorite things to taste:
-
Peanut butter
- Bananas
- Yogurt
- Canned salmon, licked from my mommy’s fingers
- Wine . . . or beer . . . make that bourbon . . . no, definitely champagne
Which brings us finally to my sense of smell. Obviously, I have an excellent nose. There are few scents that get past me, so let’s talk about where I like to stick my nose to get the very best scents:
-
Deep, deep into monkey grass where small animals like to hide
- High up into the air where the breeze carries smells from far away
- My very own kitchen where my mommy makes delicious human and canine treats
- Through the fence to greet my neighbor-dog friends
- Sign posts where . . . well, you know
So, there you have it–my five senses. Do everything you can every day to employ all of your senses to their fullest . . . and have a sense-sational week!
Oh I love to be rubbed behind my ears too. And down my nose. And hearing the peeps come through the door makes me so happy!
I like to bark, and bark, and bark . . . especially when my daddy comes home from a business trip!
We could be twins Miss HL!! We love all of the exact same things!
I knew I liked you. 🙂
Love the taste pic.
My mommy has tons of those tongue pictures. Apparently my tongue if out of my mouth and licking my lips a lot!
Cute pics, and yep we have the same senses over here. LOLl
I’ll bet your sixth sense is especially sharp. 😉
I like to sniff the air too Miss Harper Lee. Have I told you you look beautiful lately? Woooowooooo! Ku
Aww, thank you, Ku. The air carries such interesting scents!
OMGoodness, Miss HL. Every one of your sensory bits and pieces are stunning. And all together they make a brilliant creation witha heart the size of Texas. My mom is wondering how long your mom had to wait to catch that tongue picture. It’s a masterpiece!!
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Somehow, my mommy always seems to get me when my tongue is licking my lips. Her photo timing is either very good or very bad; I can’t quite decide which. 😉
Love this post! Very clever and beautiful photo’s of you MHL. I think you and us Sundogs might have a few things in common.
Thank you. I am super excited about having things in common with the Sundogs. I think they’re great!
Such a cool post – the pics are great – Miss Harper Lee is such a pretty girl – the close-ups are getting SlimDoggy all worked up!
Oh my goodness, SlimDoggy. I didn’t mean to get you all worked up. (Shhh . . . yes I did, but let’s not let the humans know!)
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! That photo of you with your green stuffie just made my Mom SWOON!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh we sooooo loved this post! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
I am so happy you enjoyed the post. That’s my Gator and I really, really love him. He has the very best squeak ever!
Cute post! Have a great weekend as well!
Thank you. 🙂
lol, they do love life, don’t they? If only we could remember to use all our senses…so far into today, I’ve only used one sense – touch, to type on my keyboard. Harper Lee’s inspired me to go outside and smell the flowers . Thanks!
I am so happy I could inspire you. Enjoy those flowers!
This post is just too fabulous! It sounds like a post one would put on a dating website…is there something you are not telling us, Miss Harper Lee? 😉
Well, it’s been a very long time since my last date. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever been on a date . . . other than with my humans, and that certainly doesn’t count. 😉
Love that last shot!
My nostrils look big enough to walk through, don’t they? Good thing they were clean. 😉
Love your tongue-licking pic 🙂
Thank you! My tongue spends a lot of time outside of my mouth!
I can see you saved the best for last, and I’m pretty sure the golden boys would agree with you on every point! Well, maybe not the salmon part… but everything else. 🙂
Oh, there’s something magical about salmon. Those boys just don’t know what they’re missing. 😉
Sounds like you have everything covered!
I think you’re right. 🙂

These photos are amazing! The one with the green toy and the tongue ones are AWESOME!
My mommy always catches me with my tongue out. Wait until I start snapping pictures of her. 😉

WHAT A RETRIEVER!!!!!
Thanks so much for the reblog! My humans actually say that I am more of a receiver than a retriever. 😉
nice dog and nice story
Thank you!
This was a beautiful post, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the compliment.
Love the fourth photo the best, amazingly beautiful dog.
Thank you so much! Hope you have a sense-sational day. 😉
What a grrreat post with pawsome pictures – you really do have a very expressive tongue Miss HL.
We hope your mommy is enjoying her break 🙂
Wally & Sammy
Thank you so much, boys! Mommy and Daddy finally came back to me yesterday. We had a quite the reunion, and now I’ve spent most of the day recovering from my two-week stay with my friends The Big Dogs. My expressive tongue was really hanging out after that! 🙂
Some of those I can go along with, MHL. But stay away from my feet! Have fun on your break–I hope you’re doing something fun.
I’m ok with humans touching my feet . . . until it’s time to have my nails clipped. I’m one girl who definitely does not understand all the human excitement over mani-pedis. 😉 My humans finally came back to me yesterday. We’re all in recovery mode today!
