52 Snapshots of Life: Week 5–Winter

52snapshots winter thek9harperlee

I live in South Louisiana. I haven’t seen snow since just before my first birthday. Not a single flake in the last five years. I look at pictures of all my doggy friends frolicking in huge drifts of puffy white snow, and all I can do is dream.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t absolutely love winter. Mother Nature does her very best to make up for our hot, humid, miserable summer days during the winter months. She sends us crystal clear blue skies and cool crisp days . . . perfect for refreshing walks in our beautiful parks.

It may not look like your typical winter wonderland. But to me, winter days like this are simply wonderful.

Throwback Thursday: Miss Lee at Four

Harper Lee 4 yrs old thek9harperlee

This is the fourth and final entry in my series of Throwback Thursday photos leading up to my fifth birthday.

While the pictures for my first, second, and third birthdays were happy coincidences–my humans just happened to take a photo around the time that just happened to be my birthday–this photo was intentional. This is the one that started a tradition of Miss Harper Lee birthday photos, which my humans hope continues for a very long time to come.

This photo was taken in my back yard at almost exactly this time last year. The azaleas were in full bloom and the garden was beautiful. Butterflies, bees, and birds flew through the air. What a difference a year makes. This year, Mother Nature has been exceptionally cruel and Old Man Winter just refuses to go away. But that won’t stop the celebration.

As my humans look back through all four years of birthday photos, they notice that my face has gotten a little more white and my nose has gotten a little less black; but I still have my puppy smile and my beautiful bourbon-colored eyes. They’ve also been reminded of all the “firsts” we’ve shared, and they’ve started to dream about all the “firsts” to come.

While the weather may change from year to year, there is one thing that will always remain constant: my humans’ love for me and my love for them. What fun we’ll have when we celebrate that love on my fifth birthday, March 17, 2014.

Just a Pretty Day

Pretty day 2 thek9harperlee

Some days need to be celebrated just because they’re pretty. This past Saturday was that kind of day. After a string of dreary, drizzly, cold, and gray days, Saturday arrived with blue skies, bright sunshine, and relatively warm temperatures. It was just too wonderful to waste any time inside, so my humans and I decided to spend every possible minute outside enjoying the beauty.

We started our Pretty Day celebration with a walk around the Louisiana State University campus. Things were a bit busy for a weekend because some students are having to attend Saturday classes in an effort to make up instruction time from all the winter storm closures this semester, a very unusual situation for South Louisiana. After watching warm-ups for a high school track meet, we climbed the stairs of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for a bird’s-eye view of Tiger Stadium. I spied a gleam in my humans’ eyes as their thoughts obviously drifted to fall and Tiger football.

I managed to pull them away and we made our way over to the Parade Ground for a lovely view of the Memorial Tower. By this time it was getting a little warm; we were all a bit parched; and, as you can tell by the clock on the Memorial Tower, it was after noon.

So we continued our Pretty Day celebration at The Bulldog, a local pub that welcomes four-legged patrons and supports canine charities. Don’t worry, the beer was for my humans. I had a nice big bowl of cold water . . .

. . . and a tiny taste of Daddy’s beer. I know that many of you have experienced much worse winter weather than we’ve seen, and that it’s far from over. And some of my friends in the Southern Hemisphere have endured unbearable summer heat. My wish for all of you is that very soon you’ll have a day that’s just a pretty day, and that you’ll celebrate every beautiful minute that it offers. Here’s to your very own Pretty Day celebration. Cheers!

Snow Day, Shmoe Day

No Snow 1 thek9harperlee

For the last 24 hours, the humans have been going nuts: The SNOW is coming! The SNOW is coming! The SNOW is coming! Schools have closed. Road de-icing crews have staged. Grocery store shelves have cleared like a Category 5 hurricane is about to hit the coast. So a little while ago, my human mommy and I went outside during the peak of our “winter storm.” Do you see any snowflakes?

Look closely. Anything? Maybe a tiny bit of ice in my hair, but that’s just about it. Now please don’t get me wrong. We are experiencing unusually low temperatures for us (alright, my dear friends to the north, please don’t laugh at us) and we are having some freezing rain and sleet. I know that all of that can add up to dangerous conditions on our roads, especially in a region that has a lack of resources to treat for ice and an abundance of humans who know absolutely nothing about driving on it. I know that ice can weigh down power lines and that losing power in these conditions can be dangerous.

But this was the scene just a few short days ago. This was actually the day after a day that was far worse than today. The difference? The humans in charge completely missed on predicting, preparing for, and reacting to last week’s winter storm. The weather humans said that the event would end much sooner than it actually did. The state transportation department failed to pre-treat the major thoroughfares and then spent the day trying to play catch up (quite unsuccessfully, I might add). And humans, as humans will do, got into their vehicles, hit the limited streets that were open, and then complained when those streets were jammed with traffic.

This was me last week as the ice started to melt and fall from the trees. I look sort of like Henny Penny. Can’t you just see me thinking, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Well, that’s sort of what all those humans who goofed with last week’s storm did with this week’s event. They over-reacted. Let’s just hope that sometime in the future they will learn to reach a happy medium.

No Snow 5 thek9harperlee

Until then, this is probably the only snowflake that I’m going to see.
